The three cafes have been advised that they are operating outside the agreed Development Approval (DA) in two ways:
If enforced, early-morning coffee would disappear and much of the outdoor seating that gives the piazza its atmosphere would go with it.
Early opening serves the people who are already out and about at sunrise.
Allow the cafes to set up as they do now, on the condition that footpaths and accessible walkways remain clear for everyone. The tables are also used by market patrons on Thursday evenings, supporting the local community and visitors to Emerald Lakes.
The piazza is where neighbours run into each other and friends and families meet. Outdoor dining is what makes it a community space.

A community is more than a collection of units, townhouses and apartments. It is created by the places and experiences that bring people together. I don’t even drink coffee, but I absolutely recognise the value these cafés bring to our community. The activity, conversations and connections around those tables are not a nuisance to our community — they are part of what makes it one.
The cafes are places to connect with friends and family. Places where stories are shared and they are places of joy. They are the heartbeat of Emerald Lakes.
I’ve travelled all over the world and I drive to Emerald Lakes most mornings to walk, and then enjoy my coffee at Pooches and Pastries. I feel like I’m in Italy when I am there. I have brought friends from overseas and they absolutely love the atmosphere. There is nothing like this place and I feel very blessed that it is in my neighbourhood.
I love that I can meet up with friends and neighbours in the piazza and that it is an alive and buzzing community space. If there is noise, it lets me know I am in a safe and active environment surrounded by people who are enjoying themselves.
These cafes form part of the amazing atmosphere of Emerald Lakes and are one of the reasons I love living here. The piazza is vibrant and full of life — our own little slice of Italy.
Our Seachange Emerald Lakes kayak group meets there twice a week and the cycling group once a week! We have anniversary breakfasts and an annual Christmas Lights buggy parade! The piazza cafes are an essential community resource!
It’s a place of locals getting together in the early hours of the morning to kick start their day — a small piece of Europe right here on the Gold Coast.
We drive or ride here from Cypress Gardens because it has a wonderful community spirit that you can’t find in other parts of the Gold Coast any more. The piazza has a happy, positive atmosphere.
This piazza creates a central hub for community connection. It is a visible and welcoming place for locals to meet. Let’s continue to facilitate what is an amazing community.
We watched Kylie build that coffee shop. She works tirelessly to ensure every customer gets great service and food. I’m 79, and early openings attract cyclists as well as dog walkers whom we’ve welcomed as friends.
